RBT Mock Test & Practice Exams — Simulate the Real Pearson VUE Experience
A real RBT mock test does more than just present questions. It replicates the conditions you will face at a Pearson VUE testing center: timed questions, four answer choices, a mix of all six Task List 3.0 domains, and a question distribution that mirrors the actual BACB exam weighting. That is exactly what these RBT practice exams are designed to do.
Each RBT mock exam uses the same format as the real RBT certification test — 85 total questions on the actual exam (75 scored, 10 unscored pilot questions mixed in randomly), delivered in a 90-minute window. Our RBT practice tests closely match this structure so you build the pacing, stamina, and decision-making skills you will need on exam day.
What is the RBT Exam (3.0 Edition)?
The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) exam is the official certification test developed and maintained by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). It is administered through Pearson VUE testing centers and is required for anyone seeking to work as a certified RBT in applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy settings across the United States and internationally.
The 2026 RBT exam is based on the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd Edition), which replaced the previous Task List 2nd Edition effective January 1, 2026. The updated outline introduced renamed domains, new task items covering cultural humility and data summarization, and a redistributed question weighting across content areas.
To qualify for the RBT exam, candidates must complete a BACB-approved 40-hour RBT training program, pass a criminal background check, and have their application approved by the BACB. The exam is delivered exclusively in-person at Pearson VUE testing centers — there is no remote or online testing option.

What Changed in 2026? Task List 3.0 vs. 2.0 – Exam Domains and Question Distribution
If you completed your 40-hour training before January 2026 or are using older study materials, understanding the differences is essential. The BACB updated the RBT Test Content Outline from the 2nd Edition to the 3rd Edition effective January 1, 2026.
| Task List 3.0 (2026) | Questions | Previous Task List 2.0 | Questions | What Changed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Collection and Graphing | 13 | Measurement | 12 | Renamed. Added data summarization and graph updating tasks. +1 question. |
| Behavior Assessment | 8 | Assessment | 6 | Renamed. Greater focus on preference assessments and RBT scope during FBAs. +2 questions. |
| Behavior Acquisition | 19 | Skill Acquisition | 24 | Renamed. Reduced from 24 to 19 questions but remains the largest domain. |
| Behavior Reduction | 14 | Behavior Reduction | 12 | More scenario-based items on BIP implementation and differential reinforcement. +2 questions. |
| Documentation and Reporting | 10 | Documentation and Reporting | 10 | No change in count. Continued emphasis on objective language and timely reporting. |
| Ethics | 11 | Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice | 11 | Renamed. New tasks for cultural humility (F.10) and interpersonal skills (F.9). |
| Total: 43 tasks | 75 scored | Total: 37 tasks | 75 scored | Total tasks increased from 37 to 43. Exam format (85 questions, 90 minutes) unchanged. |
The biggest practical change is the redistribution of questions — Behavior Acquisition lost 5 questions while Behavior Assessment and Behavior Reduction each gained 2. The 2026 RBT exam is more balanced across domains than the previous version.
Key insight: Behavior Acquisition (19 questions) and Behavior Reduction (14 questions) together account for 44% of the RBT exam. These two domains deserve the most study time. However, Ethics (11 questions) and Data Collection and Graphing (13 questions) frequently include tricky scenario-based questions that require applied reasoning rather than memorization.
How to Prepare for the RBT Exam — 5-Step Study Method
Candidates who pass the RBT exam on their first attempt almost always follow a structured study cycle rather than randomly reviewing materials. This 5-step method guides you from your first RBT practice test to exam-day readiness.
Step 1 — Take a Baseline RBT Practice Exam
Before studying anything, take the 75-question RBT practice exam without preparation. Your domain-by-domain score reveals exactly where to focus your time. This prevents you from wasting days studying topics you already know while neglecting your actual weak areas.
Step 2 — Study Your Weakest Domains Using the Study Guide
Open the RBT Study Guide and start with whatever domain you scored lowest on. Each section covers key ABA terms, real-world clinical examples, exam-style scenario questions, and the most common mistakes candidates make on the real exam. Study one domain at a time — jumping between topics reduces retention.
Step 3 — Take the Matching Unit Quiz Immediately
Active recall (testing yourself right after learning) is significantly more effective than passive re-reading. After finishing a domain guide, take the matching quiz to lock in your knowledge.
Step 4 — Take a Full-Length RBT Mock Test Under Timed Conditions
After working through all six domains, take the 80-question RBT mock exam with a 90-minute timer, no breaks, and no notes. This simulates real Pearson VUE testing conditions and builds the pacing and stamina you will need on exam day.
Step 5 — Review, Repeat, and Schedule When Ready
Compare your mock test score to your baseline. If you score 80% or higher across all six domains, you are ready to schedule the real RBT exam at Pearson VUE. If any domain remains below 70%, go back to the study guide for that specific topic, retake the quiz, and then attempt the Pearson VUE-style practice test as a final check before scheduling.
How long does this take? Most candidates who pass on their first attempt study for two to four weeks after completing their 40-hour training. Do not rush — and do not over-prepare. Use your RBT practice test scores as your readiness gauge, not a calendar.

For best results:
- Take practice tests under timed conditions
- Review explanations for every incorrect answer
- Track performance across task list domains
- Focus on weak areas before retesting
Consistent practice leads to higher accuracy and better exam readiness.

RBT Exam Day Tips
Knowing the material is half the job. Performing well under real testing conditions at Pearson VUE requires strategy.
Pace yourself carefully. With 85 questions in 90 minutes, you have roughly 63 seconds per question. If a question takes longer than 90 seconds, flag it and move on. Return to flagged questions after completing the rest. Answer every question — unanswered questions are automatically scored as incorrect.
Read all four answer choices before selecting. The RBT exam frequently includes options that are partially correct but not the best answer. The question is almost always asking for the “most appropriate” response, not just an acceptable one.
Watch for scope-of-practice traps. If any answer choice involves an RBT independently designing, modifying, or interpreting anything clinical, it is almost certainly wrong. The correct answer typically involves continuing the current protocol as written and consulting the supervising BCBA.
Look for function-intervention mismatches. Many behavior reduction questions describe a behavior’s function and present intervention options. The correct intervention must match the identified function. If the function is escape but the intervention involves withholding attention, that is a mismatch — choose the option that addresses the actual function.
Trust your preparation. If you have been consistently scoring above 80% on RBT mock tests and practice exams, you are ready. Changing answers based on second-guessing is one of the most common reasons prepared candidates miss questions they actually knew.
